Iran recently warned European leaders to stay out of the ongoing war led by the United States and Israel. This massive conflict continues to disrupt the Middle East and damage economies worldwide. Instead of forming a united front, European countries strongly disagree on how to handle the crisis, creating major confusion across the continent.
Two countries highlight this deep divide. Spain kicked American military aircraft out of its bases because Spanish leaders argue the US strikes violate international law. This bold move angered US President Donald Trump, who immediately threatened to stop all trade with Madrid. In stark contrast, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz completely supports the US mission to defeat the Iranian government.
The United Kingdom chose a middle path. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer let American forces use a military base in Cyprus, but he restricted its use to purely defensive missions. He clarified that US troops can only use the facility to intercept Iranian missiles before they hit other targets in the region.
The danger moved closer to home when a drone recently struck Cyprus, a European Union member. Greece rapidly stepped up to protect the island nation. The Greek military deployed four advanced F-16 fighter jets and a brand-new frigate to track and destroy incoming threats, even though the ship’s crew is still training.
Other allies are now rushing military gear to the Mediterranean. France announced it will send powerful anti-missile systems directly to Cyprus. Britain also joined the effort by dispatching a naval warship to secure the waters around its military base. Ukraine even praised the strikes on Iran, since Iran supplies drones to the Russian military.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen still hopes to unite the continent around peace talks and de-escalation. However, experts note that Cyprus belongs to the EU but not NATO, meaning it cannot call NATO forces for backup. Because of this, von der Leyen is pushing European nations to activate the EU’s own mutual defense treaty to protect their borders.
