DC Studios co-chief James Gunn has a blunt message for fans impatient for The Batman 2: back off. In a new interview, Gunn expressed his growing irritation with the “entitled” online outrage surrounding the sequel’s timeline, passionately defending director Matt Reeves’ right to perfect the script.
“Listen, we’re supposed to get a script in June. I hope that happens,” Gunn said. “But people should get off Matt’s nuts. Let the writer write the screenplay at his own pace. He doesn’t owe you something because you like his movie. You like his movie because of Matt.”
Gunn’s defense is rooted in his firm belief that a finished script is non-negotiable before starting production, calling the industry’s tendency to rush screenplays the “No. 1 reason” for its struggles. He confirmed that Reeves will not turn in the script “until he feels good about” it, and the project won’t move forward until then.
Warner Bros. previously pushed The Batman 2 to October 1, 2027, a five-year gap Gunn has defended as common for major sequels. The first film was a critical and commercial success, earning $772 million at the worldwide box office.
The constant need to address online speculation has also led Gunn to change his social media strategy. He revealed he is largely done debunking the countless false rumors that circulate online. “I’ve kind of quit,” Gunn admitted, explaining that engaging with rumor-mongers only gives them the traffic and attention they crave. “I think they like it. So I mostly quit.”
