Spain recently decided to completely close its skies to United States military planes taking part in the ongoing war against Iran. This bold decision marks the latest major step in Spain’s fierce opposition to the escalating conflict in the Middle East. Defence Minister Margarita Robles confirmed the strict airspace ban during a press conference on Monday. She spoke to reporters shortly after the popular Spanish newspaper El País broke the story using anonymous military sources. The government wants everyone to know that it refuses to help facilitate this overseas war in any way.
Robles told the press that the Spanish government made its strict rules clear to the American military right from the very beginning. She stated that American forces simply cannot use Spanish bases or fly through Spanish airspace for any combat missions related to Iran. The defence minister firmly described the military campaign as profoundly illegal and deeply unjust. She expressed total confidence that the international community already understands exactly where Spain stands on this vital issue.
Earlier this month, Spain took its first major action by ordering the United States to stop using jointly operated military bases in southern Spain. This strict order forced the American military to hastily relocate exactly 15 aircraft from the Rota and Moron bases. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez strongly supported the eviction, calling the foreign war incredibly dangerous and totally unjustifiable. He warned that dropping heavy bombs and starting violent conflicts will never solve the complex problems facing the modern world. Sanchez cautioned that humanity’s greatest disasters usually start exactly like this current conflict.
The sudden base closures completely infuriated United States President Donald Trump. In a rapid response, he immediately threatened to cut off all trade with Madrid as punishment for denying his military access to the region. This aggressive threat sent immediate shockwaves through the local Spanish economy. Financial analysts warn that losing American buyers could easily shrink Spain’s total export market by a devastating 2.4% before the end of the year. Small business owners face extreme pressure right now.
Despite these heavy financial threats, the left-wing government led by Sanchez completely refuses to back down. Spain currently stands as the loudest voice in Europe opposing the United States and Israeli military actions in the Middle East. Meanwhile, the rest of the European Union takes a much softer and quieter approach. European leaders only offer vague statements calling for de-escalation and basic civilian protection. They completely refuse to reject the military assault on Iran outright, leaving Spain to stand mostly alone on the crowded European stage.
Spain’s strong opposition extends far beyond the current conflict with Iran. The country remains a fierce critic of Israel’s military actions in Gaza. Last October, the Spanish parliament took historic action by writing a total arms embargo directly into national law. This permanent ban strictly prevents any Spanish company from selling weapons, military equipment, or dual-use technology to the Israeli government. Lawmakers wanted to make sure no Spanish bullets or bombs end up harming innocent people overseas.
That massive weapons ban triggered a furious diplomatic response from Israeli leaders. However, the relationship between the two nations had already hit rock bottom earlier in the year. Israel already pulled its ambassador out of Madrid back in May 2024. That initial diplomatic breakdown happened right after Spain officially recognized an independent Palestinian state. Now, by blocking American warplanes, Spain continues to prove it will prioritize its strong anti-war principles over maintaining smooth relations with powerful Western allies.
