United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres delivered a stark warning on Saturday, branding the US strikes on Iran as a “dangerous escalation” and a “direct threat to international peace and security.”
In a powerful statement, Guterres cautioned that the military action pushes a volatile region, already on the edge, closer to a devastating conflict. “There is a growing risk that this conflict could rapidly get out of control,” he said, “with catastrophic consequences for civilians, the region, and the world.”
The UN chief urgently called for de-escalation to prevent the situation from worsening. “At this perilous hour, it is critical to avoid a spiral of chaos,” he urged.
He forcefully rejected a military-first approach, insisting that dialogue was the only viable option to resolve the crisis. “There is no military solution,” Guterres declared. “The only path forward is diplomacy. The only hope is peace.”
