The Trump administration has sharply escalated its pressure on India, with a top aide accusing New Delhi of financing Russia’s war in Ukraine through its massive oil purchases. White House aide Stephen Miller stated bluntly that it is “not acceptable” for India to continue buying Russian oil.

This verbal assault follows the administration’s new 25% tariff on Indian goods, with threats of more penalties if India doesn’t change course. Since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, India’s Russian oil imports have skyrocketed from just 1% to over 30% of its total, making it a key source of revenue for the Kremlin.

However, New Delhi is pushing back firmly. Indian government sources insist they will continue buying Russian oil, citing their “steady and time-tested” relationship with Moscow that should not be viewed through a third-country lens. India also argues its purchases of discounted oil help stabilize global prices.

This public clash comes despite President Trump often highlighting his “tremendous” friendship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Analysts suggest this tough stance may be a pressure tactic to force concessions in ongoing trade talks, where Trump aims to reduce a $45 billion trade deficit with India. For now, India remains defiant, setting the stage for a major diplomatic standoff between the two nations.
