For 19-year-old Sam Konstas, the toughest part of his Test debut wasn’t facing India’s bowlers but battling the overwhelming emotion of a packed MCG. Now, as he prepares for his third Test cap, the young batsman is focused on finding calm amidst the chaos.
Konstas will return to Australia’s XI for the first Test against the West Indies in Bridgetown on June 25. Selectors recalled him and Josh Inglis, dropping Marnus Labuschagne and replacing Steven Smith, who is sidelined with a dislocated finger.
“The emotions probably got to me,” Konstas admitted, reflecting on his debut series. “But having a bit of time off to reflect and strengthen my game has helped.”
To stay grounded, he relies on a personal diary he started in school. The journal, filled with reflections and checkpoints, has become an essential tool, especially while touring. It helps him reconnect with the basics of his game, a commitment symbolized by the Test cap number 468, tattooed on his forearm.
Beyond his diary, Konstas is leaning on the team’s veterans for guidance. “I’m just trying to control my breath and have a good relationship with my batting partner,” he explained. “I always try to get advice from Uzi [Usman Khawaja], Marnus, [and] Smith, just seeing how they go about things. I’m lucky to be around them.”
With Australia still seeking a permanent opener after David Warner’s retirement, Konstas has a golden opportunity. He is expected to open the batting and will have the three-Test Caribbean tour to secure his spot ahead of the Ashes. “I just hope to grab an opportunity because it’s such a strong side,” he said. “I’m very grateful for that.”
