Look at a map of the Middle East. Find the tiny waterway between Iran and Oman. That narrow stretch called the Strait of Hormuz is the most important oil chokepoint on earth. One fifth of the world’s oil passes through those waters every single day.

Iran knows this. They have known it for decades. When America pressures them, they threaten to close the strait. When tankers get seized, oil prices spike worldwide. The strait gives Iran leverage it would not otherwise have.

The trouble started long before anyone heard of Soleimani or the nuclear deal. During the Iran-Iraq war, both sides attacked tankers carrying the other’s oil. America got involved and warships started escorting Kuwaiti tankers. Those escorts led to direct battles between American and Iranian forces.

Fast forward to 2019. Trump had just pulled out of the nuclear deal and cranked sanctions to maximum. Iran needed to push back without starting a full war. They started messing with tankers in the strait.

First came limpet mine attacks on several ships near the UAE. Japan, Norway, and Saudi Arabia all had vessels damaged. America blamed Iran. Iran denied everything. Then things escalated. Iran shot down an American drone they claimed entered their airspace. America almost bombed Iran in response but called it off at the last minute.

The biggest moment came when Iran seized a British tanker. They dropped commandos from helicopters onto the ship’s deck and took control in minutes. The message was clear. If you mess with us, we mess with your ships and your oil.

America responded by sending more warships to the region. They built a coalition to patrol the strait. But nobody could truly secure those waters. The strait is too narrow. The coastline belongs to Iran. Any real fight there would turn into a nightmare for global oil supplies.

Today every tanker captain thinks twice before sailing through those waters. Every insurance company charges higher rates for strait voyages. And every Iranian commander knows they hold a weapon America cannot easily take away.
