Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov arrived in Havana early Friday with a clear message for the world. He promised that Russia would never abandon or betray Cuba. During a crowded press conference, Ryabkov outlined aggressive new plans to help the Communist island fix its failing power grid. He directly blamed the decades-old United States embargo for crippling the local economy and causing massive daily hardships for ordinary Cuban citizens.

To prove this loyalty, Russia recently sent a massive relief shipment to the island. Last month, the heavily sanctioned Russian oil tanker Anatoly Kolodkin docked at a Cuban port carrying exactly 700,000 barrels of crude oil. Energy experts estimate this single shipment holds a street value of roughly $55 million. For a small country starving for natural resources, 700,000 barrels can keep critical national infrastructure running for about 15 to 20 days. This delivery marks the first major fuel transfer since Washington tightened its grip and cut off the island’s primary fuel supply lines.

Ryabkov told reporters that Moscow views this massive oil delivery as just the beginning of a much longer partnership. He insisted that Russian support will go far beyond a single shipload of crude. The diplomat made it clear that his country cannot simply walk away and leave Cuba to face such tough economic problems on its own. He expects the diplomatic events over the past 4 weeks to move both nations forward as they seek permanent solutions to the illegal blockade.

The energy crisis in Cuba creates a severe daily nightmare for local families. Right now, nearly 2.5 million residents across the island face rolling blackouts lasting 10 to 12 hours every day. Without reliable electricity, fresh food quickly spoils in warm refrigerators, and local hospitals struggle to keep their life-saving machines running. Because the local power grid sits on the edge of total collapse, United States officials decided to look the other way temporarily. They allowed the sanctioned Anatoly Kolodkin to deliver its cargo strictly for humanitarian reasons. Still, Ryabkov warned the press that Russia will not limit its future energy shipments just to please angry politicians in Washington.

The conversation at the press conference quickly shifted to broader global politics. Ryabkov declared that Moscow has absolutely no intention of leaving the Western hemisphere. He accused political leaders in Washington of being obsessed with pushing both Russia and China completely out of Latin America. The Russian diplomat made it clear that no matter what threats the United States issues, his government will maintain a strong and visible presence right off the coast of Florida.

To highlight his point about failed foreign policies, Ryabkov pointed directly at the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. He heavily criticized the recent military attacks launched by the United States and Israel against Iran. He argued that the violent conflict proves that using military force, harsh economic sanctions, and political bullying simply do not produce the results Washington actually wants. He urged the international community to watch how these aggressive tactics ultimately backfire on the world stage.

This latest trip to Havana continues a larger diplomatic push to rebuild historic alliances. Russia currently works hard to rekindle the extremely close ties it shared with Cuba back during the Soviet era. The groundwork for Friday’s announcement actually started earlier this year. Back in February, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez traveled to Moscow to hold private meetings with President Vladimir Putin and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Now, those winter meetings translate directly into millions of dollars worth of physical fuel arriving at Cuban shores.
