Football fans will see Iran compete at the World Cup this summer. FIFA officially shut down a wild proposal to remove the Iranian national team from the tournament. Paolo Zampolli, a special envoy for US President Donald Trump, recently asked organizers to give Iran’s spot to Italy. Sources inside FIFA quickly rejected the idea and confirmed Iran will keep its rightful place in the upcoming games.
Zampolli pitched the swap directly to Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino. As a native of Italy, the envoy wants to see his home country compete in the massive tournament. He argued that Italy deserves a free ticket because the nation previously won exactly 4 World Cup titles. Political insiders claim Zampolli also designed this plan to fix a recent diplomatic fight. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni recently criticized Trump for his harsh comments about Pope Leo XIV, and Zampolli hoped that a major favor in football would smooth things over.
Italian officials absolutely hated the idea. Italy failed to qualify for their 3rd straight World Cup after suffering a humiliating playoff loss to Bosnia and Herzegovina last month. Italian Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti called the free pass proposal shameful. Sports Minister Andrea Abodi firmly stated that a team must qualify on the pitch. Olympic Committee President Luciano Buonfiglio agreed, noting he would feel deeply offended if organizers just handed Italy a spot without earning it.
FIFA leader Gianni Infantino stood firm on the official rules. He completely dismissed the swap idea last week while speaking in Washington. Infantino promised fans that the Iranian team would arrive and play their matches. He praised the Iranian squad for playing good football and qualifying fairly. He also reminded world leaders that international sports should always stay out of messy global politics.
The US, Canada, and Mexico will host the massive tournament starting on June 11. Iran already knows its exact playing schedule. The team will face New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15. Six days later, on June 21, they will play against Belgium in the same city. Finally, the squad will travel north to Seattle to play Egypt on June 26. Earlier this year, the Iranian football federation tried to move these matches to Mexico, but Infantino confirmed the games will stay in the United States.
The ongoing war involving the US, Israel, and Iran created serious doubts about the team traveling to America. In March, Iranian officials actually threatened to skip the tournament due to safety fears over US and Israeli airstrikes. Trump later told reporters that the US welcomes the Iranian athletes, but he warned they probably should stay home for their own personal safety.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio clarified the official border rules for the tournament. He told reporters that the United States government never banned the Iranian athletes from entering the country. However, Rubio promised strict security checks at the border. He warned that the government would block any Iranian coaches, staff members, or officials who hold ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The athletes will receive their travel visas, but their political minders will stay outside.
Iranian officials quickly blasted the American plot to replace. The Iranian embassy took to the social media platform X to call the United States morally bankrupt. The embassy mocked American politicians for fearing the simple presence of 11 young Iranian men on a football pitch. They also praised Italy for earning its historical greatness in football through hard work on the pitch, rather than begging for political privileges.
Government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani settled the final debate on Wednesday. She told reporters that Iran stands fully prepared to participate in the summer games. The team will pack their bags and travel to America. Article 6 of the FIFA rules allows the governing body to replace any team that withdraws. Zampolli actually tried this same trick to replace a team before the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. However, since Iran refuses to withdraw, the 4-time champion Italian team will watch the entire tournament from their living rooms.
