President Donald Trump sent shockwaves through the global economy on Friday morning. He announced that he would drastically raise tariffs on automobiles and auto parts from the European Union. Trump claims the 27-country bloc completely failed to live up to its side of a major trade agreement they signed last summer. The president used his Truth Social platform to deliver the harsh news directly to the public and European leaders.

In his social media post, Trump stated he feels pleased to announce the new penalties. He explained that because the European Union is not complying with the fully agreed trade deal, he will take immediate action next week. He promised to increase the tariffs on cars and trucks entering the United States from the European Union. Trump boldly declared that the new tariff rate will jump to exactly 25 percent.

Currently, the United States taxes European automobiles and auto parts at a much lower rate of 15 percent. This lower rate comes directly from the Turnberry Deal. The two major economic powers reached this agreement last July at a summit at Trump’s golf resort in Scotland. The deal outlined very specific requirements for both sides to follow to maintain peaceful trade relations.

Under the Turnberry Deal, the European Union agreed to lower its own tariff rates on American industrial goods. Furthermore, the European bloc promised to purchase exactly $750 billion worth of American energy. They also pledged to invest another $600 billion into the American economy. In exchange for these massive financial commitments, the United States agreed to keep its tariff rates on European cars relatively low.

This sudden threat from Trump arrives just one week after a major diplomatic visit. Maroš Šefčovič, the top trade official for the European Union, traveled to Washington last week. He held deep meetings with several Trump administration officials. When Šefčovič left the American capital, he told reporters he felt completely reassured that the trade deal between the two global powers remained totally solid.

During his visit, Šefčovič stated he received strong reassurances from Ambassador Jamieson Greer and all his American contacts. They told him that a deal is a deal for both sides. He emphasized that the European Union regards the agreement’s specific terms and conditions as absolutely fundamental. He promised the European side would implement and fulfill every single promise they made in Scotland.

Despite those friendly diplomatic words, serious trade tension still boils just below the surface. The European Union is extremely angry that many of its products currently face heavy American steel and aluminum tariffs. On the other side of the ocean, the United States feels incredibly frustrated with Europe. American officials hate the incredibly slow, plodding pace at which the European Union implements its end-of-July agreement.

The European political system moves very slowly. While the European Parliament successfully passed legislation back in March to lower tariffs on American goods, the process is far from over. The massive bloc still has to negotiate the final details of the deal with its individual member capitals and the powerful European Commission before anything becomes official law.

Bernd Lange, a German Social Democrat and chair of the International Trade Committee in the European Parliament, issued a fiery statement on Friday in response to the threat. He called President Trump’s behavior completely unacceptable. Lange insisted that the European Union and the Parliament are actively honoring the Scotland deal. He explained they are currently drafting the final legislation and aim to finish the entire process by June.

Lange also threw some heavy accusations back at Washington. He first claimed that the United States repeatedly breached the trade agreement. He pointed out that over 400 European products containing steel and aluminum now face an average tariff of 26 percent in the United States. He called the latest move by Trump another arbitrary attack, stating that this is absolutely no way to treat close global partners. He urged Europe to respond with the utmost clarity and firmness.

Trump holds the legal power to make these sudden changes. The United States imposes these tariffs on European automobiles under Section 232, a law that focuses on protecting domestic industries. A recent February Supreme Court ruling overturned some of Trump’s other tariffs, but that ruling did not affect Section 232 powers. This legal loophole gives the Trump administration broad flexibility to quickly ratchet up the duties on the auto sector without asking Congress for permission.

These auto tariffs carry massive political weight. The original threat of high car taxes played a significant role in forcing the European Union to the bargaining table last summer. A 25 percent tax puts immense pressure directly on Germany’s signature automobile industry. Major luxury brands like Volkswagen, BMW, and Audi rely heavily on American buyers to make billions of dollars in profit every single year.
