The Department of Defense announced a massive new agreement on Friday. Military leaders signed contracts with 7 major technology companies to bring their artificial intelligence tools directly into highly classified computer networks. The Pentagon wants to upgrade its digital systems and bring modern tools to the battlefield to stay ahead of global rivals.

This historic deal includes some of the biggest and most powerful names in the tech industry. Elon Musk’s SpaceX, the ChatGPT creator OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Nvidia, Amazon Web Services, and Reflection all signed on the dotted line. The military already has active artificial intelligence contracts with a few of these companies, including Palantir and OpenAI, but this new agreement significantly expands their reach across secret government channels.

However, one major player did not make the final list. The Trump administration completely excluded Anthropic from the new military partnership. The government blacklisted Anthropic because the company demanded strict safety rules for how the military uses its artificial intelligence. Anthropic leaders flatly refused to let soldiers use their software for fully autonomous weapons or mass citizen surveillance programs.

Missing out on this deal costs Anthropic a massive amount of money. Last year, lawmakers passed a historic funding package known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. That specific law gave the Pentagon billions of dollars to spend exclusively on artificial intelligence development and offensive cyber operations. By signing deals with 7 direct competitors, the Trump administration gains major leverage over Anthropic in the ruthless battle for government cash. The tech giants have spent months aggressively competing to grab a piece of that massive budget.

Military leaders say they will only use the new software for lawful operational tasks. The Pentagon released a formal statement explaining that these new agreements will completely transform the armed forces. Generals plan to build an artificial intelligence-first fighting force. They believe the advanced software will help commanders make faster, smarter decisions, giving American troops a massive advantage in actual combat operations across all areas of warfare.

The Department of Defense already sees massive success with its current digital tools. Defense officials noted that exactly 1.3 million military personnel have actively used the military’s internal artificial intelligence platform, GenAI.mil. Troops and civilian workers use the system daily to speed up paperwork, analyze large amounts of data, and streamline normal administrative tasks.

Until very recently, Anthropic held a special and highly profitable place at the Pentagon. The company’s main software, called Claude, was the only artificial intelligence model permitted within the military’s most secure and classified networks. That relationship crashed when President Donald Trump demanded the company drop its strict safety restrictions. Trump wanted the military to use Claude for all lawful purposes without any guardrails holding the generals back, but Anthropic simply refused to back down.

Following the bitter disagreement, the Pentagon officially declared Anthropic a supply chain risk. Normally, the government only uses that harsh label for dangerous companies tied to foreign enemies. The move effectively banned Anthropic from securing any future government contracts. In response, Anthropic filed a major lawsuit against the Trump administration. Just last month, a federal judge in California stepped in and blocked the government from enforcing the blacklist.

Despite the ugly legal fight, the White House recently restarted conversations with Anthropic. The sudden change of heart happened after the tech company announced a massive software breakthrough. Anthropic revealed a brand new tool called Mythos. This powerful program can instantly spot serious cybersecurity threats hidden deep inside computer networks. However, Mythos also generates a detailed step-by-step guide that hackers could use to attack private businesses or government systems.

Knowing the sheer power and danger of the Mythos tool, the government realized it needed to talk. Anthropic Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei traveled to Washington last month to smooth things over. He walked into the White House for a private, face-to-face meeting with Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. Both sides are now seeking a middle ground that protects national security while respecting the company’s core safety rules.
