Russia prepares to celebrate its annual May 9 Victory Day parade, but the event faces a massive new threat. Ukrainian drones might crash the massive party. The 2026 edition of this famous commemoration, which celebrates the defeat of Nazi Germany by the Soviet Union, already looks like a massive disappointment. Last month, the Kremlin shocked the world when it announced that absolutely no tanks or heavy missiles would roll through Red Square. This marks the first time in 2 decades that Russia will not use the parade to showcase its heavy military might.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy used this moment to taunt his Russian rivals. On Monday, he spoke to world leaders attending the European Political Community Summit in Yerevan, Armenia. During his speech, Zelenskyy strongly hinted that Kyiv might dispatch its own explosive drones directly to the Russian capital to ruin the holiday.

Zelenskyy openly mocked the missing military hardware. He told the gathered leaders that Russia announced a massive parade without any actual military equipment. He claimed that the Russian government simply cannot afford to spare the military equipment right now. More importantly, he suggested that Russian generals live in fear that Ukrainian drones might suddenly buzz right over Red Square while the whole world watches on live television. He added that this fear shows everyone that the Russian military is not strong right now.

Military experts widely believe the Kremlin decided to exclude the heavy tanks and missiles from this week’s parade because of severe defensive vulnerabilities. Exactly 4 years into its massive invasion of Ukraine, the Russian military cannot afford to pull vital weapons away from the active front lines just for a television show. The ongoing war drained massive amounts of resources, leaving the capital city feeling surprisingly exposed to sudden aerial attacks.

Kyiv regularly proves this vulnerability by launching drones deep inside Russian borders. Ukrainian forces use these cheap, long-range drones to inflict heavy damage on key military and economic sites. Just last week, a Ukrainian drone successfully struck vital oil infrastructure in the Black Sea port city of Tuapse. This marked the 3rd successful strike on that specific port city in exactly 1 month, forcing Russian authorities to scramble their emergency crews repeatedly.

The threat reached the very edge of the Kremlin earlier this week. On Monday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin publicly confirmed that a Ukrainian drone managed to bypass city defenses and strike an elite residential building. This building sits a mere 6 kilometers from the Kremlin walls. While emergency crews reported exactly 0 victims from the blast, the strike sent a terrifying message to the Russian leadership about the reach of the Ukrainian military.

During his speech at the Yerevan summit, Zelenskyy urged European leaders to maintain maximum pressure on Russia. He wants the international community to force Moscow to choose diplomacy instead of continuing the bloody war. Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin actually offered to declare a strict 1-day military truce with Ukraine exactly on May 9 to coincide with the peaceful celebrations in Moscow.

Kyiv completely rejected this short-term proposal. Ukrainian leaders insisted that a prolonged, permanent ceasefire is necessary before they stop fighting. Following the rejection, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters that any final decision on a ceasefire rests entirely with Putin.

Because of the very real drone threat, the Kremlin desperately scrambles to strengthen its air defenses around Moscow ahead of the weekend parade. Military commanders ordered additional anti-aircraft missile systems to move from outside regions directly into the capital city limits. The government also plans to lock down local communication networks to stop spies from coordinating an attack. Authorities imposed strict new restrictions on satellite internet access and regular mobile phone connections. According to reports from Novaya Gazeta, the government will even block basic SMS text messaging services completely between May 5 and May 9 to ensure total security during the parade.
