Fresh attacks from the United States and Iran shattered a fragile 4-week ceasefire in the Middle East on Tuesday. The two nations fought fiercely for control over the Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump launched a new military campaign, which he calls Project Freedom. He sent the United States Navy to escort stranded oil tankers safely through the dangerous water. The American military reported on Monday that its forces destroyed 6 small Iranian boats, along with several drones and cruise missiles.
The conflict severely disrupted global shipping. Iran effectively closed the narrow strait back on February 28 when American and Israeli forces first began their attacks. This waterway serves as a massive choke point for the global supply of oil and fertilizer. The chaos caused severe price spikes worldwide. Oil prices actually dropped 1% on Tuesday, but only after jumping a massive 6% in the previous trading session. Traders lowered prices slightly after seeing signs that American naval escorts might finally break the Iranian blockade.
Both sides tell very different stories about what happened on the water. American commanders stated that their guided-missile destroyers successfully escorted 2 merchant ships through the strait. The shipping company Maersk confirmed that its American-flagged ship, the Alliance Fairfax, left the Gulf safely on Monday. However, Iran denied that any ships crossed successfully. Iranian officials also claimed that the American forces actually shot at civilian boats, killing 5 local people. Iran then fired warning shots at an approaching American warship and forced it to turn around.
The violence quickly spilled over into the neighboring United Arab Emirates. Iranian missiles hit the major oil port of Fujairah and set the facility on fire. This port usually gives oil companies a safe way to export oil without passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The British maritime security agency reported that attackers hit 2 ships off the coast of the United Arab Emirates. Meanwhile, the Emirati oil company ADNOC confirmed that Iranian drones struck 1 of its empty oil tankers.
Iranian authorities released a new map showing a much larger area of the sea under their direct control. This new zone stretches far down the coastline of the United Arab Emirates. Officials in the United Arab Emirates called these attacks a serious escalation and promised they have the right to strike back. Iran’s state television network defended the strikes. Military officials there claimed they only attacked the United Arab Emirates to punish the United States for its reckless military actions.
Other countries also caught the crossfire. South Korea reported that its merchant ship, the HMM Namu, suffered a major explosion and fire in its engine room while navigating the strait. A spokesperson for the South Korean government said all crew members escaped without injuries, but they still do not know if an intentional attack caused the blast.
Diplomats struggle to find a way out of the war. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi warned the United States and the United Arab Emirates against sinking deeper into a military quagmire. Pakistan currently mediates the peace talks. Officials from Washington and Tehran have held exactly 1 round of face-to-face meetings so far. All attempts to schedule a second meeting failed.
Iran recently submitted a 14-point peace proposal to the United States through leaders in Pakistan. This plan suggests that both sides should stop fighting and first resolve the shipping crisis. Iran wants to delay any discussions about its nuclear energy program until after they sign a peace deal. Trump spent the weekend reading the proposal, but told reporters he will probably reject it.
The war has already killed thousands of people and damaged the global economy. Trump insists that the original attacks aimed to wipe out immediate threats from Iran. He pointed to Iran’s ballistic missile programs and its financial support for groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. Most importantly, Trump wants to seize and remove Iran’s stockpiles of enriched uranium so the country can never build a nuclear weapon. Meanwhile, American intelligence officials told reporters that the current war caused only limited damage to the Iranian nuclear program. Iran still firmly denies that it ever planned to build a bomb.
