Spain just announced a major rescue plan for a stranded cruise ship. The Spanish government confirmed it will receive passengers from the MV Hondius in exactly 3 or 4 days. A terrifying hantavirus outbreak recently swept through the massive ship, causing panic among the guests and crew.

For the last 2 days, the cruise ship has sat moored just off the coast of Cape Verde. The situation on board turned deadly very quickly. Medical staff confirmed that exactly 3 passengers have already died from the severe virus. Furthermore, doctors suspect that several other passengers are currently carrying the virus and need immediate hospital care.

Spanish authorities stepped up to help resolve the crisis. The government officially granted the ship permission to sail toward the Canary Islands and dock safely. While the Spanish officials confirmed the general destination, they did not announce the specific port where the ship would eventually tie up.

The Spanish Health Ministry released a statement late Tuesday evening to explain the next steps. The ministry promised that once the ship arrives, medical teams will duly examine and care for every single member of the crew and the passengers. After the doctors clear the guests, the government will help transfer the healthy passengers back to their respective home countries.

Many people wondered why the ship chose to sail to the Canary Islands rather than stay in Cape Verde. Spain explained that it made this difficult decision based entirely on international law and basic humanitarian principles. The people stuck on the ship desperately need modern medical facilities to survive the dangerous outbreak.

The Spanish Health Ministry clarified the medical reality of the situation. They stated that the World Health Organization reviewed the local hospitals and explained that Cape Verde simply lacks the medical equipment to handle an operation of this magnitude. The small island nation cannot safely quarantine or treat that many highly infectious patients simultaneously.

Geographic location played the biggest role in the final decision. The Health Ministry pointed out that the Canary Islands are the closest location that has the necessary medical capabilities. The Spanish government stated it feels a strong moral and legal obligation to assist these stranded people. The ministry also noted that several Spanish citizens are currently trapped aboard the infected vessel.

The World Health Organization confirmed that complex medical evacuation plans are currently underway. Emergency teams are organizing secure transport planes and setting up isolated hospital rooms to receive the sickest patients as soon as the ship arrives at the dock.

A representative of the World Health Organization working in Cape Verde spoke with the AFP news agency about the ship’s long-term plan. The official explained that once the medical teams have evacuated the sick and vulnerable passengers in the Canary Islands, the MV Hondius can resume its original route and sail toward the Netherlands.
