The ongoing war between the United States and Iran reveals serious weaknesses in the American military machine. This deadly conflict gives China a perfect chance to watch its biggest rival struggle on the world stage. American forces currently fail to break through a stubborn Iranian naval blockade in the Middle East. Meanwhile, global gas prices skyrocket past $100 a barrel, and the Pentagon shifts its main focus away from stopping Beijing.
United States President Donald Trump prepares to meet Chinese leader Xi Jinping next week. They will sit down during a very fragile and uncertain ceasefire. Trump faces massive political trouble back home as voters complain about the endless fighting. Furthermore, frustrated European allies completely refuse to send military help to the region. Because of these huge problems, current and former defense officials fear China holds all the winning cards heading into the high-stakes meeting.
Trump originally postponed this important summit by 2 months. He needed time to focus entirely on the brand new war with Iran. However, the American military campaign completely changed its main goal over the past 8 weeks. Generals originally wanted to destroy the hidden Iranian nuclear weapon programs. Now, they fight a messy, drawn-out war over who controls the Strait of Hormuz. This narrow waterway handles roughly 20 percent of the daily global oil supply.
A defense official speaking privately said the Chinese military absolutely watches every single American operation against Iran. Chinese generals desperately want to find weak spots they can exploit in a future war against the United States. They track exactly how American commanders plan their missions and move their ships. They also count the exact pace of American missile strikes and study how American spies gather secret intelligence on the battlefield.
Beijing is aggressively building up its own massive stockpile of long-range missiles and attack drones. Chinese leaders clearly see the American military struggling to reopen the shipping lanes or stop cheap Iranian attacks. To fight Iran, the Pentagon moved 1 entire aircraft carrier strike group and several large Navy ships carrying 2,500 Marines out of the Pacific Ocean. Sending these troops to the Middle East proves the American weapon arsenal has real limits.
Despite these obvious struggles, American defense leaders insist they still maintain a strong grip on the Pacific. Admiral Samuel Paparo oversees the military team in the Asian region. He told lawmakers last month that moving 2,500 Marines did not impose any real cost on their ability to stop Chinese aggression. Paparo argues that American sailors actually gain highly valuable combat experience while dodging real missiles in the Middle East.
While Chinese forces boast far superior technology to Iran’s, Tehran fights very smartly. The Iranian military successfully uses extremely cheap, 1-way attack drones to overwhelm expensive American air defenses completely. Defense strategy expert Becca Wasser notes that China possesses a much larger missile stockpile than Iran. She believes China could easily fire thousands of advanced missiles the same way Iran fires cheap drones, completely overwhelming American radar systems in the first 24 hours of a new war.
However, the Chinese military faces its own massive internal problems. China has not fought a real war since it invaded Vietnam way back in 1979. Furthermore, the Chinese government currently conducts a massive military purge to clean up rampant corruption. A Chinese court sentenced 2 former defense ministers to death just this week. Since 2022, the government has fired over 100 senior military officers, leaving the army with very little experienced leadership.
Despite these internal purges, the Chinese government has spent decades studying the American way of war. Beijing watched closely when American pilots dropped precision-strike weapons during Operation Desert Storm. After the 2008 global financial crisis, China began launching its own aircraft carriers to challenge American naval dominance and secure its own sea routes.
A second former defense official noted that China knows exactly how America projects power across the globe. Chinese spies know how American pilots conduct air strikes and use electronic warfare. Most importantly, China watches how incredibly fast the United States burns through expensive Tomahawk and Patriot missiles. They know every single million-dollar missile fired at an Iranian drone is 1 less missile America can use to defend the Pacific.
