United States President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he does not need any help from China to end the ongoing war with Iran. He spoke to reporters right before leaving for a massive political summit in Beijing. Even though hopes for a lasting peace deal look incredibly weak, Trump confidently stated he can handle the situation alone. He told the press he does not plan to ask Chinese President Xi Jinping for help, claiming America will win the fight peacefully or otherwise.

The bitter conflict continues to cause massive headaches across the globe. More than 1 month has passed since a temporary ceasefire stopped the daily bombing, yet neither side shows any willingness to compromise. Meanwhile, Iranian leaders are actively tightening their grip on the vital Strait of Hormuz. Iran recently cut special deals with Iraq and Pakistan to ship oil safely and liquefied natural gas through the dangerous waterway. Several other countries now want to sign similar deals, which could permanently normalize Tehran’s control over the ocean.

To counter this growing power, the Trump administration pushed a clear message on Tuesday. American officials announced that top leaders from the United States and China agreed last month that no one should charge tolls to ships passing through the region. China did not argue with this statement. This matters deeply because China still buys a massive amount of Iranian oil to run its busy factories.

During his upcoming trip to Beijing, political experts expect Trump to pressure Xi into talking some sense into Tehran. The United States demands that Iran completely dismantle its nuclear energy program and immediately open the blocked strait. However, Iran countered with a massive list of its own demands. Iranian leaders want billions of dollars in war compensation and an immediate end to the American naval blockade. They also demand that the United States stop fighting on all fronts, including the battles involving Hezbollah in Lebanon. Trump completely rejected the Iranian list on Monday, calling their demands pure garbage.

This endless political deadlock creates absolute chaos for the global economy. Because the Strait of Hormuz remains largely closed to normal traffic, energy markets panicked. Brent crude oil futures climbed rapidly, pushing the price over $107 a barrel on Tuesday afternoon. Before the war started, this narrow stretch of water safely handled roughly 20 percent of the world’s daily oil supply.

The United States military continues to use heavy force to maintain its strict naval blockade. The United States Central Command confirmed that the massive aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln is currently patrolling the Arabian Sea. American sailors on the ship work around the clock to stop Iranian trade. So far, the military has successfully redirected exactly 65 commercial vessels away from Iranian ports and permanently disabled 4 other ships that refused to follow orders.

Fighting this massive naval war burns through taxpayer money at an alarming rate. The Pentagon released a new financial report this week, estimating the total cost of the war at exactly $29 billion so far. This huge number represents a sudden $4 billion increase from the military estimate provided late last month. A defense official explained to lawmakers that the military needs this extra $4 billion to repair broken equipment and cover unexpected operational costs.

Regular American citizens feel the heavy burden of this war every time they go shopping or fill up their cars. The conflict directly drives up gasoline prices at local stations all across the country. In April, consumer prices rose at a very brisk pace for the second straight month. This rapid jump resulted in the largest annual increase in national inflation in nearly 3 years, leaving many families struggling to pay their basic monthly bills.

The financial pain makes the war incredibly unpopular with American voters. A brand-new Reuters and Ipsos poll conducted on Monday highlights the growing frustration. The survey found that exactly 2 out of 3 Americans believe Trump has not clearly explained why he actually went to war with Iran. This angry group includes almost all Democrats and exactly 1 in 3 Republicans. With nationwide elections happening in less than 6 months, this public anger threatens the Republican Party’s control over Congress.

Despite the heavy American pressure and the strict naval blockade, Iranian officials remain completely defiant. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps refuses to back down. An Iranian official told the Fars news agency that the military officially expanded its definition of the Strait of Hormuz. They now consider the Strait a massive military zone stretching from the coastal city of Jask in the east to Siri Island in the west. To prove they mean business, Iranian soldiers continue to hold heavy combat drills right in the middle of Tehran to prepare for enemy attacks.
