Meta Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg sent a blunt memo to his employees on Wednesday. He announced that the social media giant will lay off 8,000 workers. This massive job cut represents roughly 10% of the entire company workforce. Zuckerberg explained that the company must make these hard choices because success in the artificial intelligence market remains completely uncertain and requires fierce competition.

In the internal message, Zuckerberg called artificial intelligence the most consequential technology of our lifetimes. He told his staff that the companies leading the artificial intelligence race today will ultimately define the next generation of the internet. Meta representatives declined to comment publicly on the internal memo after The New York Times first reported it.

This current round of firings did not come as a total surprise to the staff. Meta executives warned employees back in April that a major round of layoffs would happen the following month. During that initial warning, the company also canceled plans to fill 6,000 open job postings. Executives told workers that cutting these jobs would free up cash to offset massive investments in artificial intelligence development.

While 8,000 people will lose their jobs entirely, many others will simply change desks. According to an insider who discussed the internal moves, Meta will transition about 7,000 current employees into new roles. These new jobs will focus completely on artificial intelligence. The company clearly wants to reorganize its talent pool to match its new corporate obsession.

The layoffs will affect dozens of different departments across the massive technology company. However, executives completely shielded a few specific groups from the chopping block. The company protected all teams working on artificial intelligence infrastructure, foundation models, and software monetization. These protected employees hold the keys to Meta’s future money-making plans.

Zuckerberg tried to soften the blow in his message. He wrote that he always feels sad when saying goodbye to people who contributed to the company’s mission. He expressed deep gratitude to everyone leaving the company for their hard work. He then defended the cuts, stating that he wants to transform Meta into the best place for talented people to have the greatest possible impact. He claimed that the remaining employees will appreciate having less bureaucracy and fewer managers blocking their daily work.

Despite the positive spin from the chief executive, these job cuts arrive at a time of intense anxiety for Meta employees. The Facebook parent company has already conducted several rounds of layoffs this year. Data from the anonymous professional network Blind shows how much the internal mood has soured. The overall company rating given by staff members sank 25% from its highest point in the second quarter of 2024. Furthermore, the workplace culture rating plummeted a massive 39%.

Employees worry that even more cuts will happen later this year. Some inside sources expect another round of layoffs in August, followed by another batch of firings in the fall. Zuckerberg addressed these fears directly in his Wednesday memo. He stated that executives do not expect any other companywide layoffs this year. He also admitted that leaders failed to communicate their plans clearly in the past, and he promised to improve that specific area going forward.

Meta workers have endured a brutal timeline of job losses. In January, the company fired roughly 1,000 employees from its Reality Labs division. That team handles the virtual reality headsets and metaverse projects. In March, Meta fired hundreds more staffers. Also in March, the company announced plans to fire human contractors who moderate content on the social networks. Meta will use artificial intelligence software to handle those moderation tasks instead.

Meta is not the only technology giant firing workers to fund new artificial intelligence projects. Just last week, Cisco announced plans to fire approximately 4,000 employees. Cisco Chief Executive Officer Chuck Robbins wrote a blog post explaining the move. He stated that the companies that will win in the artificial intelligence era must possess the discipline to shift their capital toward areas with the strongest demand continuously. Meanwhile, Microsoft told its staff in April that it would offer voluntary buyouts for the first time in company history. Roughly 7% of Microsoft workers in the United States currently qualify for that buyout offer.
