United States President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that the military stands ready to launch new attacks against Iran. He warned that American forces would strike Tehran again if the two sides fail to reach a peace agreement. Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews, Trump described the current situation as sitting right on the borderline of a major escalation. He noted the government could wait a few days to receive acceptable answers, but things could move very quickly if diplomacy fails.

Trump originally paused military strikes under Operation Epic Fury about six weeks ago to allow time for ceasefire negotiations. Since then, diplomats have secured almost no real progress. The stalled talks cause gasoline prices to climb higher across America every single week. These massive energy costs hurt Trump and his Republican Party as they worry about his dropping approval ratings ahead of the November congressional elections.

Iranian leaders quickly dismissed the American threats and issued their own severe warnings. The Revolutionary Guards stated that any renewed aggression will spark a massive war that expands far beyond the Middle East. To enforce their regional power, Tehran created a new organization called the Persian Gulf Strait Authority. This group now attempts to control all maritime traffic moving through the vital Strait of Hormuz.

Despite the angry public rhetoric, both nations continue talking behind closed doors. Pakistan hosted the only round of direct peace talks so far and now acts as the primary messenger between Washington and Tehran. The Pakistani interior minister traveled to the Iranian capital on Wednesday to deliver new messages. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan also called Trump this week to praise the ceasefire extension and push for a reasonable solution.

Iran recently submitted a new peace proposal to American diplomats, but the offer repeats demands that Trump already rejected. The Iranian government demands total control over the Strait of Hormuz, massive financial compensation for war damages, the removal of all economic sanctions, and the complete withdrawal of American troops. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian went on social media to declare that forcing his country to surrender through threats will never work.

The ongoing standoff caused the biggest disruption to global energy supplies in history. Iran shut down the Strait of Hormuz to almost all foreign ships on February 28 after American and Israeli forces started bombing their military sites. The United States responded by creating a strict blockade around Iranian ports. Iran now claims it will reopen the strait to friendly countries, but they want to charge access fees that American officials call completely unacceptable.

Some commercial ships finally started moving through the danger zone this week. Two giant Chinese tankers carrying roughly 4 million barrels of crude oil successfully exited the strait on Wednesday. Iran agreed to ease transit rules for Chinese vessels while Trump visited Beijing for a recent summit. South Korean officials also confirmed one of their tankers safely crossed the waterway after cooperating with Iranian naval forces.

Shipping monitors counted 54 ships transiting the strait last week, which doubles the number from the week before. Iran claimed another 26 ships crossed over the past 24 hours. However, that number remains a small fraction of the 140 ships that normally crossed the strait every single day before the war began. These tiny signs of movement gave energy markets some hope, pushing Brent crude oil futures down 5.63 percent to settle at $105.02 per barrel.

The regional conflict involves several other powerful nations. Trump revealed on Tuesday that he came within one hour of ordering new strikes after several Gulf neighbors asked for American military help. This lines up with reports that Saudi Arabia launched its own unpublicized airstrikes against Iranian targets back in late March. Iranian forces responded by firing missiles at Israel and neighboring Arab states, killing dozens of people.

The human cost of the war remains devastating. American and Israeli bombs killed thousands of people in Iran before the April ceasefire started. Israel also invaded Lebanon to hunt down the Hezbollah militia, which killed thousands more and forced hundreds of thousands of civilians to abandon their homes.

Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu started this war to destroy Iran’s nuclear program and eliminate its missile capabilities. They also hoped the heavy bombing would spark a revolution and help Iranian citizens overthrow their leaders. So far, Iran still possesses a dangerous stockpile of near-weapons-grade uranium and a vast network of proxy militias. The ruling clerics crushed a massive public uprising earlier this year and currently face no organized opposition.
