Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Beijing on Wednesday. The two leaders celebrated their strong strategic ties. Putin hopes to secure a massive gas supply agreement that the two countries have debated for more than 10 years. Xi welcomed Putin with a grand ceremony at the Great Hall of the People. Children waved flags while the military fired a loud gun salute.

Xi told reporters that China and Russia must focus on long-term goals. He wants both countries to build a much fairer global governance system. He credited their deep political trust for bringing their bilateral relationship to this high level. The two leaders plan to finish their busy day with a private tea meeting to discuss international problems in a very casual setting.

Putin responded by calling their partnership a perfect model for modern international relations. He stated that their strong bond helps keep the world stable. He also reminded everyone that Russia remains a highly reliable energy supplier, especially now that the war is disrupting oil shipments in the Middle East. Before leaving the stage, Putin officially invited Xi to visit Russia for another summit next year.

Energy deals sit at the very top of Putin’s agenda. China already buys massive amounts of Russian oil through ships and underground pipelines. Now, Moscow wants Beijing to finally sign a contract for the Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline. During his last visit in September 2025, Putin claimed both sides agreed to build the massive project. However, Chinese officials rarely speak about the pipeline in public.

The two countries still cannot agree on basic details, such as the actual price of the gas. Energy experts think these difficult negotiations could easily drag on for several more years. The current fuel crisis involving Iran gives Russia a strong selling point. Putin argues that the pipeline gives China a safe, long-term energy source. Yet Beijing prefers to buy its fuel from multiple countries to avoid relying too heavily on any single partner for its daily energy needs.

People around the world are watching this summit closely because United States President Donald Trump visited Beijing just last week. While Putin and Xi met, the Chinese commerce ministry suddenly confirmed a massive deal with the United States. China will buy exactly 200 passenger jets from Boeing. This huge purchase shows that Beijing wants to fix its economy and trade ties with Washington. China clearly wants to handle its American business completely separate from its political commitments with Russia.

China wants even more deals with the United States. Trade officials in Beijing hope to extend their current trade truce with Washington. They want both countries to cut import tariffs on at least $30 billion worth of products each. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters they should not compare Putin’s visit to Trump’s recent trip. Trump walked through a secret garden during his highly choreographed visit. Peskov urged people to focus on the actual agreements instead of the welcome ceremonies.

The Kremlin set very high expectations for this trip. Russian officials expect the two leaders to sign about 40 different documents. They will also publish a massive 47-page joint statement that explains how they will strengthen their partnership. Patricia Kim works as a foreign policy expert at the Brookings Institution. She explained that signing dozens of agreements proves the China-Russia bond remains incredibly strong. She noted that these massive document dumps show the world how well the two countries coordinate on global issues.

This strong bond helps Russia survive its current challenges. The two countries formed a partnership right before Western nations hit Moscow with heavy financial sanctions over the war in Ukraine. Now, Russia relies heavily on China to keep its entire economy afloat. Bilateral trade between the two countries dropped last year, but Putin noted that the numbers are finally rising again. The Russian leader clearly needs his old friend Xi to keep buying Russian goods so Moscow can fund its military and support its regular citizens.
