French President Emmanuel Macron issued a stern warning to European leaders on Friday. He bluntly stated that the United States, China, and Russia now stand firmly against European interests. Speaking in Athens during a public discussion with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Macron urged the continent to wake up and take immediate action. The Kathimerini newspaper organized the public event, where Macron told the audience that this unique moment in history requires a bold response. He demanded that European nations build their self-confidence and deliver a strong, independent political agenda. He told the crowd that waiting for others to solve their problems will only lead to disaster.

The French leader focused heavily on the shifting relationship between Europe and the United States. He explicitly warned that political tension across the Atlantic Ocean will easily outlast President Donald Trump. Macron views this American shift not as a temporary phase, but as a permanent historical trend. He explained that the world order shifted, and America now focuses heavily on its own internal problems and its fierce rivalry with Asia. While he acknowledged that Europe and America still share deep historical bonds and common values, he firmly believes the current American strategy of putting its own interests first will last for many decades.

Macron highlighted a major change in how European politicians view Washington today compared to a few years ago. During the first Trump term, many European countries viewed the aggressive American trade and foreign policies as a strange aberration. They incorrectly assumed the political friction would simply disappear after 4 years, requiring no fundamental changes from Europe. However, as Trump navigates his second term, that wishful thinking has completely vanished across the continent.

Today, European leaders see the reality of the situation much more clearly. Macron pointed out that after so many years of trade disputes and political friction, his colleagues finally understand the absolute need to react. He stressed that the 27 nations of the European Union must act as a single, united force to defend their economic and military interests. With roughly 450 million citizens depending on them, European politicians realize they can no longer rely entirely on foreign superpowers for their daily security and economic growth. Macron believes that moving in this independent direction gives Europe the best chance to survive in a highly competitive global market.

To turn his bold words into physical action, Macron flew directly to Athens right after attending an informal European Council meeting in Cyprus. He traveled to Greece specifically to sign a major security pact with Prime Minister Mitsotakis on Saturday. This upcoming ceremony will officially renew a powerful military agreement the two leaders originally signed back in 2021. The updated document heavily strengthens the military bond between the two European nations.

The core of this security pact contains a strict mutual defense clause. If a foreign power attacks one country, the other promises to send immediate military support. Furthermore, the 2021 agreement included a massive financial commitment. Greece officially agreed to purchase at least €3 billion worth of advanced French warships to upgrade its naval fleet. This massive weapons deal directly supports the French defense industry while giving Greece the modern ships it needs to patrol its maritime borders. The Greek government already started receiving some of these expensive vessels to secure the Mediterranean Sea.

Saturday’s renewal ceremony will extend this vital security pact for another 5 full years. After this 5-year period ends, the contract includes a special clause that automatically renews the agreement. The two leaders also plan to expand their teamwork far beyond buying warships and sharing military troops. The updated pact will include brand new areas of direct cooperation, focusing heavily on shared foreign policy goals, joint civil protection programs, and broader economic investments between the two nations.
