Behind every war headline are human stories of loss and resilience. [DailyAlo]

Hezbollah dragged Lebanon into a brutal Middle East war when the group fired rockets at Israel. The militant group launched these attacks to avenge the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who died in recent US-Israeli military strikes. Since the war erupted on March 2, the conflict has devastated the region. Today, the Lebanese government desperately wants peace, but Hezbollah refuses to stop fighting.

United States President Donald Trump recently stepped in to broker a temporary peace deal. After bringing ambassadors from Lebanon and Israel together in Washington for 2 historic meetings, Trump announced an initial 10-day ceasefire that started on April 17. He later extended this pause by another 3 weeks. However, the agreement allows Israel to defend itself against imminent threats. Because of this rule, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu authorized his military to expand their strikes across Lebanon on Monday.

Netanyahu told the public that Israel still faces 2 central threats from Hezbollah forces. He specifically pointed to the deadly 122mm rockets and explosive drones that the group continues to launch across the border. The prime minister stated that stopping these weapons requires a strong combination of operational and technological military action. Following his orders, the Israeli army struck Hezbollah infrastructure in the eastern Bekaa region and several southern towns.

Israeli ground troops currently operate deep inside Lebanese territory. The military established a special yellow line that cuts exactly 10 kilometers deep into southern Lebanon along the border. Israeli commanders warned residents not to return to their homes in this danger zone. On Monday, Lebanese state media reported heavy Israeli artillery shelling and active demolition operations in at least 2 border locations.

Hezbollah fighters completely ignored the ceasefire rules and launched their own fresh attacks on Monday. The militant group targeted Israeli troops operating in the south. In one specific incident, Hezbollah forces attacked 1 Israeli army bulldozer that was busy demolishing houses in the border town of Bint Jbeil.

The ongoing violence sparked a bitter political war inside Lebanon. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun strongly supports the direct negotiations happening in Washington. He wants to secure a permanent peace deal similar to the historic 1949 armistice agreement that ended the first Arab-Israeli war. Aoun threw a heavy insult at Hezbollah, stating that the people who dragged Lebanon into this current war committed pure treason against their own country.

Even though Aoun wants peace, he promised his citizens that he would protect their national pride. He assured the public that he would never accept a humiliating agreement. The president simply wants to end the daily destruction and stop the state of war that has crippled the Lebanese economy and displaced thousands of innocent families.

Hezbollah completely rejects the government’s push for peace. Naim Qassem, the chief of the militant group, went on the Al-Manar television channel to blast the Lebanese president. Qassem described any direct negotiations with Israel as a grave sin. He warned the government authorities that their diplomatic actions would never benefit Lebanon.

Qassem demanded that the government back down from the peace talks immediately. He claimed the current leaders neglect the rights of the Lebanese people and give up precious land to the enemy. He also swore that his fighters will never surrender their weapons and will fight until the Israeli army leaves every single inch of occupied land.

In response to this stubbornness, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a stark warning. Katz stated that Hezbollah’s refusal to negotiate will bring catastrophic consequences to all of Lebanon. As the diplomats argue, the citizens caught in the middle just want the bombs to stop falling so they can rebuild their lives.
