Russia struck Ukraine’s capital city of Kyiv with a massive wave of missiles and drones in the early hours of Sunday morning, setting buildings on fire and trapping civilians in bomb shelters. The devastating aerial assault sent explosions reverberating through the city shortly after 1 a.m. local time, forcing thousands of residents to flee to subway stations for safety. Local officials confirmed that the multi-wave attack killed at least four people and injured more than 20 others.

The attack began shortly after Ukraine’s air force issued an urgent warning on its Telegram channel that Russia might launch a hypersonic Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile. President Vladimir Putin has previously boasted that the Oreshnik travels at more than 10 times the speed of sound, making it completely impossible for Western air defense systems to intercept. While the air force did not immediately confirm if an Oreshnik hit any direct targets during this specific wave, the threat alone threw the capital into a state of absolute terror.

The incoming weapons caused widespread destruction across the capital, particularly in the central district of Shevchenko. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that a direct strike hit a nine-story residential building, igniting a massive blaze that emergency crews spent hours trying to extinguish. In the same neighborhood, falling debris blocked the entrance of an air raid shelter at a local school, trapping several people inside. Emergency services also worked to free another group of people believed to be stuck inside a shelter at a nearby business center.

This massive assault represents a direct act of retaliation from Moscow. Russian President Vladimir Putin recently ordered his military commanders to prepare options for a severe counterstrike. His order followed a deadly Ukrainian drone strike on a college and student dormitory in the Russian-occupied town of Starobilsk, located in the eastern Luhansk region. Russian officials claimed that the Ukrainian drone strike killed 18 people and wounded 42 others, a loss of life that infuriated the Kremlin.

The scale of Russia’s Sunday morning bombardment was absolutely staggering. In total, the Ukrainian air force reported that Russia launched exactly 90 missiles and 600 drones during the combined attack. Air defense systems managed to shoot down a large portion of the incoming targets, but the sheer volume of weapons overwhelmed the city’s defenses. Debris rained down across six of Kyiv’s ten municipal districts, sparking fires in schools, homes, and public parks.

The devastating attack did not catch Ukrainian officials entirely by surprise. On Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the United States embassy in Kyiv issued urgent public warnings about the risk of a major Russian airstrike. The U.S. embassy posted an alert on its website stating it had received intelligence concerning a potentially significant air attack scheduled to occur within the next 24 hours. They begged all American citizens and residents to seek shelter immediately if the sirens started.

President Zelenskyy reacted with fury to the brutal bombardment, taking to the Telegram messaging app to demand immediate action from the international community. He argued that the global community must put massive pressure on Moscow to prevent it from expanding the war further. He specifically called on the United States, Europe, and other democratic allies to fast-track the delivery of advanced air defense systems to protect Ukrainian skies.

The ongoing war continues to drain resources and severely damage both economies. The economic fallout from the war has driven global inflation up by an extra 1.5% over the past two months and upended energy markets. This energy crisis has cost global businesses over $1.5 billion every week due to lost productivity and transport delays. While European leaders broadly back Ukraine, many remain hesitant to fast-track its applications for EU and NATO membership, despite Zelenskyy’s urgent pleas for stronger security guarantees.

As the sun rose over Kyiv on Sunday morning, rescue workers and firefighters continued to dig through the smoking ruins of the Shevchenko district. The local governor, Mykola Kalashnyk, confirmed that the surrounding Kyiv region suffered three additional injuries from falling missile debris. While the city’s military administration works to clear the streets of shattered glass and concrete, the citizens of Kyiv brace themselves for further attacks. They know that until Western allies deliver more defensive weapons, their lives remain at the mercy of Moscow’s hypersonic arsenal.
