South Korea and Croatia have agreed to expand their bilateral cooperation across several critical industries significantly. South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun met with his Croatian counterpart, Gordan Grlic Radman, in Seoul on Monday morning to discuss new partnership opportunities. The high-level meeting marked a major diplomatic milestone, as it represented the first visit to South Korea by a Croatian foreign minister in exactly 8 years.

During the summit, Cho warmly welcomed Radman’s historic visit and called for the 2 nations to build a much more future-oriented relationship. He urged both countries to focus heavily on high-growth sectors, specifically targeting the arms industry, battery manufacturing, and renewable energy technologies. South Korea has emerged as a global leader in these fields, exporting billions of dollars’ worth of high-tech equipment every single year.

Radman responded with equal enthusiasm, noting that practical cooperation between the 2 countries is already expanding rapidly. He cited several bilateral memorandums of understanding (MOUs) that the 2 governments signed recently. These agreements cover joint defense projects, economic development, and advanced science and technology initiatives. Croatia seeks to leverage South Korea’s world-class engineering and defense capabilities to modernize its national infrastructure.

The focus on the weapons sector is particularly important for Croatia right now. As geopolitical tensions rise across Europe, Eastern European nations are scrambling to upgrade their aging military hardware. South Korea’s booming defense export market recently captured a solid 1.5% share of the global arms trade, with total annual sales exceeding $17 billion. Croatia plans to explore purchasing advanced South Korean artillery, armored vehicles, and air defense systems to bolster its national security.

The battery and green energy sectors also offer massive mutual benefits. South Korea’s top battery manufacturers, including LG and Samsung, invest billions of dollars globally to support the shift toward electric vehicles. Croatia is home to Rimac, a famous electric hypercar manufacturer, and is currently trying to build a robust local green energy supply chain. By working together, the 2 nations hope to build advanced battery components and expand their shared green energy footprint.

To protect their citizens, the ministers agreed to move forward with a brand-new MOU focused on public safety. This agreement will establish a clear policy framework to allow people to travel between the 2 countries much more safely. Before recent geopolitical conflicts disrupted global travel, over 400,000 South Korean tourists visited Croatia’s beautiful Adriatic coast every year. Both governments want to restore these high tourism numbers by ensuring strict safety protocols are in place.

Young people will also gain exciting new opportunities from this diplomatic meeting. The 2 ministers agreed to accelerate their ongoing discussions regarding a bilateral working holiday program. Once finalized, this program will allow young adults aged 18 to 30 to travel, live, and work in each other’s countries for up to 12 months, fostering deep cultural understanding and creating lifelong personal connections.

Finally, the leaders agreed to continue and expand educational and research exchanges between their respective foreign ministries. By sharing research papers, hosting joint seminars, and exchanging young diplomats, both countries hope to build a highly stable and predictable relationship for the future.

This successful Seoul summit proves that South Korea is rapidly expanding its diplomatic and economic influence deep into Eastern Europe. By offering world-class defense equipment, advanced battery technology, and close economic cooperation, Seoul is cementing its status as an indispensable partner for European nations. The next few months will show how quickly these new agreements translate into actual, multi-million-dollar contracts on the factory floor.
