United States President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he strongly dislikes a new peace proposal from Iran. The two countries are currently fighting in a tense 2-month war. A temporary ceasefire started on April 8, but both sides still refuse to back down. Trump wants to end the unpopular conflict, but his recent comments show the deadlock will likely last for many more weeks.

The details of the new Iranian offer remain a secret. However, Trump told reporters at the White House that the Iranian government wants things he simply cannot accept. He described the leadership in Tehran as completely divided into 2 or 3 separate groups. He noted they desperately want to make a deal, but he refuses to sign their current paperwork. American and Iranian officials continue to negotiate by phone, seeking common ground after their brief summit in Islamabad last month.

One massive issue blocking a peace deal involves the Strait of Hormuz. Iran currently controls this vital waterway, completely choking off 20 percent of the global oil and gas supply. Trump faces intense pressure from business leaders to break this grip. Because ships cannot pass through the strait safely, global oil prices stay well above $100 a barrel. By Friday afternoon, Brent crude oil dropped slightly by 2 percent, landing at exactly $110 a barrel after news of the potential talks broke.

Iranian leaders say they want peace, but only on their terms. Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated his country eagerly wants diplomacy. However, he demands that the United States change its aggressive attitude. He wants American leaders to stop using threatening words and provocative actions. On his personal Telegram channel, Araqchi also sent a clear warning. He declared the Iranian armed forces stand perfectly ready to defend their borders against any new military threats.

The deadly conflict originally began on February 28. United States and Israeli forces launched heavy military strikes on Iranian targets. Since that first day, thousands of people have died in extreme violence. Right now, the United States Navy operates a strict blockade to stop Iran from exporting crude oil. Military officials confirmed they stopped exactly 45 commercial vessels by Friday afternoon.

The United States Treasury Department issued a harsh warning to global shipping companies. Officials said any ship captain who pays a toll to Iran will face severe financial punishments. The Treasury even banned shipping companies from giving charitable donations to the Iranian Red Crescent Society. Meanwhile, Trump told leaders in Congress he does not need their permission to continue military operations. A specific law set a Friday deadline for the war, but Trump argued the April 8 ceasefire technically ended the active hostilities.

Rumors about new military action swirl around Washington. Reports suggest that generals recently briefed Trump on plans for fresh airstrikes. These strikes would aim to force Iran into a weaker negotiating position. When reporters asked Trump about his options, he asked if America should blast them and finish the fight forever, or try to make a deal. He claimed he personally prefers to avoid more military action for human reasons. Even so, Iranian sources say their military just activated heavy air defense systems. They expect a short and intense American bombing run, followed by an Israeli attack.

The ongoing conflict heavily damages the Iranian economy. The strict American blockade successfully stopped most energy exports, leaving the government short on cash. Despite the financial pain, the country seems capable of surviving the current standoff. Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei took over the country after his father died at the start of the war. He wrote a public message asking business owners to avoid firing their workers. He also urged Iranian citizens to buy domestic goods rather than imports to help the local economy.

Other global powers urgently want the fighting to stop. China relies heavily on Middle Eastern oil to run its massive factories. Fu Cong, the Chinese ambassador to the United Nations, called the situation an urgent emergency. He demanded that both sides maintain the current ceasefire and reopen the Strait of Hormuz immediately. Trump plans to travel to Beijing later this month for a major diplomatic trip. The Chinese ambassador firmly believes the blocked waterway will dominate the conversations between Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
