A devastating Ukrainian drone attack struck a student dormitory and academic building in the Russian-occupied city of Starobilsk on Friday, killing at least 4 people and injuring dozens of children. The late-night strike targeted the Starobilsk Professional College, which is part of the Luhansk Pedagogical University. The explosions caused the five-story building to collapse partially, trapping teenagers under piles of heavy concrete and prompting a frantic rescue operation in the occupied eastern region of Ukraine.

Leonid Pasechnik, the Moscow-installed governor of the Luhansk region, confirmed the details of the attack on social media. He reported that exactly 86 children, aged between 14 and 18, were sleeping inside the dormitory when the drones hit. The strike injured 39 people, including 35 children who suffered wounds of varying severity. Emergency workers rushed to the scene and managed to pull at least two survivors from the smoking debris, while child rights officials warned that up to 18 teenagers remained trapped under the collapsed floors.

Russian President Vladimir Putin immediately condemned the attack, calling it a deliberate and heinous crime against innocent minors. During a meeting in the Kremlin, Putin ordered the Russian Defense Ministry to submit formal proposals for a military response. He rejected claims that the destruction resulted from air defense accidents, asserting that Ukrainian forces launched three distinct waves of drone strikes at the same location. Moscow also requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council to demand international condemnation of the strike.

The Russian Foreign Ministry claimed that Ukrainian forces used long-range weapons supplied by NATO countries to carry out the attack, accusing foreign specialists of helping with targeting operations. Russian investigators opened a formal criminal terrorism case following the incident. In Moscow, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters that the government must severely punish the Kyiv regime for unleashing monstrous terror against the civilian population.

Ukrainian officials have not commented directly on the Starobilsk college strike. However, the Ukrainian military has repeatedly stated that it strictly obeys international humanitarian law and does not target civilian facilities. Independent security analysts have frequently noted that Russian occupation forces routinely use civilian infrastructure, such as schools and hospitals, as hidden military bases. This controversial practice directly violates international laws and often turns civilian buildings into active military targets.

While Kyiv remained silent about the dormitory strike, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed other major long-range operations on Friday. He announced that Ukrainian forces successfully struck key targets linked to Russia’s highly valuable Yaroslavl oil refinery, located roughly 700 kilometers behind the front lines. This massive energy facility represents billions of dollars in annual revenue for Moscow’s war effort. Zelenskyy declared that Ukraine is bringing the war back home to Russia to stop Moscow from funding its invasion. He noted that the Russian military has suffered over 145,000 casualties since the start of this year alone, including nearly 86,000 dead.

The city of Starobilsk lies about 65 kilometers from the active front lines in eastern Ukraine. Russian forces originally captured the strategic hub in March 2022 during the first full month of their invasion. Over the last four years of conflict, the war has claimed thousands of civilian lives. The United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine has recorded over 60,000 civilian casualties since 2022, with nearly 90% of those casualties occurring in areas controlled by the Ukrainian government.

As the rescue operation in Starobilsk continues, psychological support teams have deployed to help terrified families awaiting news of their missing children. The regional authorities warned that the death toll could easily rise as heavy machinery slowly clears the massive concrete slabs. This deadly strike has further escalated the bitter conflict, ending any hope of extending the recent ceasefire and pushing both sides toward another round of destructive retaliatory attacks.
