When the leaders of the two largest economies in the world sat down in Beijing on Thursday, they did not start their conversation with modern problems. United States President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met at the massive Great Hall of the People. Observers expected them to immediately argue about global trade rates, which affect trillions of dollars, or the ongoing war in the Middle East. Instead, Xi opened the high-stakes summit by bringing up a military conflict that ended more than 2,000 years ago.

Xi looked at Trump and asked a direct question about the future of their nations. He asked if the United States and China could overcome the so-called Thucydides Trap to create a completely new paradigm for major countries. This specific historical reference instantly sparked massive interest online. People around the world rushed to search the internet for the term, wondering if the Chinese leader had just issued a thinly veiled threat of war against the United States.

Graham Allison, a political scientist at Harvard University, coined the concept of the Thucydides Trap in the early 2010s. Allison based his entire theory on the ancient writings of Thucydides, a famous Greek historian. Thucydides wrote a detailed account of the Peloponnesian War, a brutal conflict between Athens and Sparta that began in 431 BC and lasted nearly 30 years. The historian determined that the rapid rise of Athens created massive fear in Sparta, making a terrible war absolutely inevitable.

Allison took this ancient Greek pattern and applied it directly to modern global history. He looked at the past 500 years and identified exactly 16 cases in which a fast-rising nation threatened a powerful, established empire. Of those 16 historical cases, 12 ended in a bloody war. In this modern framework, political experts cast China as the rising Athens and the United States as the established Sparta.

Xi actually favors this specific historical concept and uses it often. The Chinese leader has invoked the term since at least 2013 to explain his global worldview. However, Xi uses the theory to argue that war is never truly inevitable. During a major speech in Seattle back in 2015, he told the crowd that countries only fall into these traps if they repeatedly make terrible strategic miscalculations. He insists that if both nations exercise patience and restraint, they can easily avoid a catastrophic military conflict.

The Chinese leader is not the only powerful figure obsessed with this ancient Greek theory. During Trump’s very first term in office, several of his top officials studied the concept closely. Former National Security Adviser HR McMaster and Defense Secretary James Mattis both read Thucydides. Steve Bannon, the former chief strategist for Trump, specifically brought up the trap during a 2018 interview. However, Bannon used the theory to argue that America must stand up aggressively to Beijing, taking the exact opposite view of Xi.

Many university professors and historians strongly criticize this entire framework. They argue that the theory misidentifies several key historical events and creates a rigid model that ignores the power of modern diplomacy. Experts point out that the theory completely ignores the most important example of the 20th century. During that time, the British Empire peacefully handed over global leadership to the United States without firing a single shot. This peaceful transfer proves that war between two massive powers remains completely avoidable.

Immediately after making his historical reference, Xi delivered a very stern warning regarding Taiwan. He told Trump face-to-face that the two superpowers could violently collide if Washington mishandles the island dispute. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning later clarified Xi’s strong stance for the press. She stated that Taiwanese independence and peace across the strait remain as totally irreconcilable as fire and water.

Trump chose to ignore the Taiwan warning during their joint public appearance completely. The White House later released an official summary of the meeting that left out any mention of the disputed island. Instead, the American press release simply stated that the two world leaders had a very good meeting focused heavily on strengthening economic cooperation between their markets.

Later in the day, Xi adopted a much warmer and friendlier tone toward his American guest. He told reporters that his dream of Chinese national rejuvenation and Trump’s famous goal to make America great again do not have to clash. Xi stated that the two massive visions can move forward in complete tandem. He added that if the two nations cooperate, they can increase financial prosperity.

Early Friday morning, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to share his thoughts on the ancient Greek reference. He interpreted the historical trap as a direct comment on American weakness over the past few years. Trump wrote that when Xi elegantly referred to the United States as a declining nation, the Chinese leader actually meant the terrible damage America suffered during the 4 years under Joe Biden. Trump proudly stated that while America was declining 2 years ago, it now stands as the hottest nation in the world. He finished by hoping the relationship with China will grow stronger than ever before.
